Homeless and Hungry

A familiar scene is about to decend upon the Metro area.  It is one that is surreal.  It brings a whole new light to a very real situation in our community.

Reports from the YWCA Women’s Shelter indicate they are consisently at or above capacity — women and children.  Reports from Churches United for the Homeless (woman, children, families and individuals) indicate they are full on a nightly basis.  Reports from the New Life Center — full to capacity on a regular basis.  Reports from the Dorothy Day House of Hospitality — full to capacity on a regular basis.

Reports from the Housing Assistance Agencies in Cass and Clay County – Waiting lists are 3 – 18 months long depending on need and availability.

Reports from the Salvation Army – an increase in the number of meals served daily.  Requests for rent assistance also increasing.

Reports from the local food pantries – the need in the community has risen.

I do believe there are Angels Among Us.  Some of those angels are in unawares and some of them come in the form of you and me.  So, let’s do the right thing because it’s the right thing to do.

Sad to see homelessness on the rise, as well as domestic violence and child abuse rates. Times are tough, and we can hope those that are able will help to the measure they can. Unfortunately, though, as the needs are rising, most non-profits that assist with these issues, are struggling with less donations and grants. It is a lose-lose situation. :-(
